The Value of Small Beginnings
Zechariah 4:10 NLT
"Do not despise these small beginnings, for the Lord rejoices to see the work begin…"
In our culture, especially in Texas, there's a tendency to celebrate only the biggest and most visible successes. But the Bible tells us that God finds joy even in the smallest of beginnings. This reassurance from Zechariah is a powerful counter to our usual metrics of success and achievement. It encourages us to find value in the gradual processes of life and faith, recognizing that every grand project or towering achievement begins with a single, often small, step.
Small beginnings are present in all facets of life, from starting a new job or ministry to planting a church or beginning a relationship. These moments might lack the grandeur we sometimes long for, but they are filled with potential. Just as a tiny seed can grow into a massive tree, our smallest efforts can evolve into our most significant accomplishments if they are nurtured with care and dedication.
Furthermore, embracing small beginnings requires humility—a quality highly valued in the scriptures. It means being willing to start slow, to learn, and to grow without the pressure of immediate results. This mindset allows us to be patient with ourselves and others as we grow in faith, wisdom, and love.
Prayer:
Heavenly Father, help us to value the small beginnings You scatter throughout our lives. Teach us patience and humility as we nurture these beginnings into Your intended outcomes. May we rejoice in these humble starts, knowing they please You and lead to Your greater glory. In Jesus' name, Amen.
