The Danger of Doubting

Genesis 3:1-6
"When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it. She also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it."

In the serenity of Eden, Eve faced a pivotal choice influenced by doubt. This doubt wasn’t self-originated but was planted by the serpent’s cunning question, “Did God really say?” Today, we face similar doubts, often exacerbated by the pressures and chaos of daily life. These doubts can cause us to question the very core of God’s promises and our understanding of His will.

Doubting God’s word can lead us into making decisions based not on faith but on fear, not on truth but on misconceptions. Eve’s decision to eat the forbidden fruit was based on a momentary doubt of God’s command—a doubt that promised wisdom but delivered woe. Similarly, when we question the truths we have learned from Scripture, we risk making choices that diverge from the path God has designed for us.

Here’s how we can confront and overcome these doubts:

Reaffirm God’s Truths: Regularly immersing ourselves in scripture is vital. By knowing God’s Word, we can rebuff the doubts that come our way.

Seek Godly Counsel: When doubts arise, turning to a trusted spiritual leader or a wise friend can provide the clarity and confirmation we need.

Reflect on Past Victories: Remembering times when following God’s word brought us through challenging circumstances can strengthen our faith and dispel doubts.

It's crucial to acknowledge that doubting does not make us failures; it makes us human. What’s important is how we respond to these doubts. By firmly grounding ourselves in God’s promises and seeking His guidance, we can ensure that our decisions reflect our faith and not our fears.

Prayer:
Lord God, in moments of doubt, remind us of Your unchanging truth. Help us to hold steadfast to Your Word, using it as a lamp to our feet and a light to our path. Grant us the wisdom to seek and accept godly counsel and the courage to trust in Your promises, especially when doubts cloud our judgment. May we always choose faith over fear, and truth over deception. In Jesus' name, Amen.
