Spare Tire or Steering Wheel?

James 1:5 ESV
"If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him."

Corrie ten Boom’s question, “Is prayer your steering wheel or your spare tire?” challenges us to examine the role of prayer in our lives. Often, we treat prayer as a last resort, something we turn to only in times of crisis. This approach makes prayer our "spare tire," pulled out only when we’re in trouble. However, to live a faith-filled life, prayer should be our "steering wheel," guiding and directing our every step. By making prayer central to our lives, we align ourselves with God’s will and purpose.

When prayer is our steering wheel, it becomes the guiding force behind our decisions and actions. Just as a driver uses the steering wheel to navigate the road, we use prayer to navigate life’s challenges and uncertainties. Through constant communication with God, we seek His wisdom and direction, ensuring that we stay on the right path. This proactive approach to prayer keeps us grounded in our faith and sensitive to the Holy Spirit’s leading.

Shifting our perspective on prayer from a spare tire to a steering wheel requires intentional effort and discipline. Start by setting aside dedicated time for prayer each day, making it a non-negotiable part of your routine. Incorporate prayer into your daily activities, whether through brief moments of thanksgiving, intercession, or seeking guidance. Encourage your family to do the same, fostering a culture where prayer is seen as the first line of action rather than a last resort. This consistent practice will help to transform prayer into a central aspect of your life.

When prayer guides our lives, we experience a deeper sense of peace and assurance, knowing that God is in control. We become more attuned to His voice, able to discern His will with greater clarity. This not only benefits us but also sets a powerful example for our children, teaching them to rely on God for direction in their own lives. By making prayer our steering wheel, we demonstrate our trust in God’s plan and our commitment to following His lead, creating a legacy of faith for future generations.

Prayer:
Lord, help us to make prayer the steering wheel of our lives, guiding our every decision and action. Forgive us for the times we have treated prayer as a last resort, and teach us to seek You first in all things. May our lives be a testament to the power of prayer, showing our children and others the importance of constant communication with You. Lead us, direct us, and keep us on the path You have set before us. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
