2 Kings 12:2 NIV
"Jehoash did what was right in the eyes of the Lord all the years Jehoiada the priest instructed him."
Jehoash, the youngest king of Judah, ascended to the throne at the tender age of seven during a tumultuous time in Israel's history. His story, found in 2 Kings 11-12, is a testament to the power of godly influence and the importance of spiritual mentorship. Jehoash was hidden in the temple by his aunt Jehosheba to protect him from the murderous intentions of his grandmother Athaliah. Under the guidance of Jehoiada the priest, Jehoash grew up in the house of the Lord, learning the ways of God and leading the nation in righteousness.
The success of Jehoash’s reign was significantly influenced by Jehoiada's mentorship. This highlights the vital role that spiritual mentors play in the development of our faith and character. Just as Jehoiada guided Jehoash, we need godly mentors who can provide wisdom, support, and accountability. As parents and guardians, we are called to be like Jehoiada to our children, leading them in the ways of the Lord and ensuring that they grow up with a strong foundation of faith.
Jehoash’s story also emphasizes the importance of being rooted in the house of the Lord. It was within the temple's walls that Jehoash found refuge, instruction, and spiritual growth. Today, the church should serve as a similar sanctuary for our children, offering a community of believers who can nurture and support their faith. Regular attendance and active participation in church activities help to anchor our children in their faith, providing them with the tools and resources they need to navigate life’s challenges.
Just as Jehoash became a godly leader because of his upbringing in the house of the Lord, we too can raise a generation of leaders who will impact their world for Christ. This requires intentional effort to immerse our children in environments where they can grow spiritually. Encourage your children to participate in church programs, seek out spiritual mentors, and engage in regular family devotions. By doing so, we equip them to stand firm in their faith and lead others in righteousness.
Prayer:
Heavenly Father, we thank You for the example of Jehoash and the godly mentorship he received from Jehoiada. Help us to be spiritual mentors to our children, guiding them in Your ways and nurturing their faith. May our homes be like the house of the Lord, a sanctuary where our children can grow spiritually and find refuge. Equip us to raise a generation of godly leaders who will stand firm in their faith and lead others to You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
