Those Who Water

Galatians 6:9 (NIV)
“Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.”

In the journey of faith, the role of the waterer is both crucial and challenging. After the seed of the Gospel has been planted, it requires ongoing nurturing, encouragement, and care to grow. As waterers, we come alongside those who have heard the Gospel but have not yet fully surrendered their lives to Christ. This role involves teaching, mentoring, and providing consistent support as individuals navigate their spiritual journey. Galatians 6:9 reminds us to persevere in this work, even when the results are not immediately visible, for at the proper time, we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.

Watering the seeds of faith demands patience and dedication. Like a gardener who carefully tends to their plants, we must be mindful of how we nurture others. This might mean answering difficult questions, offering encouragement during tough times, or simply being a steadfast example of Christ's love. The growth we witness—whether through a deepening understanding of Scripture, a renewed commitment to prayer, or an increasing desire—serves as a powerful reminder that our efforts are not in vain. These small signs of growth are proof that God is at work, even when we cannot see the full harvest.

Yet, the role of the waterer comes with its own set of challenges. It can be discouraging when progress seems slow or when setbacks occur in the lives of those we’re trying to help. There are times when we may feel weary, tempted to give up because the results are not what we hoped for. However, Galatians 6:9 encourages us to remain steadfast. Growth often takes place beneath the surface, hidden from our view, and it’s in these unseen moments that God is doing some of His most profound work. Our responsibility is to keep watering, trusting that God will bring forth the growth in His perfect timing.

The Apostle Paul understood the importance of perseverance in this role. While he planted the seeds of the Gospel, it was Apollos who watered them. Both roles were essential, yet Paul acknowledged that it is God who causes the growth. As waterers, we must hold onto this truth. We are not responsible for the final outcome; our job is to remain faithful in our efforts, knowing that at the proper time, God will bring about a harvest. Galatians 6:9 serves as an encouragement to continue doing good, for we will see the fruits of our labor if we do not grow weary.

Prayer:
Heavenly Father, thank You for the privilege of being a waterer in Your Kingdom. Help us to remain steadfast and patient as we nurture the seeds of faith in others. Remind us of the promise in Galatians 6:9, that in due season we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. Give us the strength to persevere, trusting that You are working even when we cannot see the results. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
