God our Judge

Isaiah 33:22 (ESV)
"For the Lord is our judge; the Lord is our lawgiver; the Lord is our king; he will save us."

In any courtroom, the judge holds the highest authority, tasked with making decisions based on the law. Similarly, in our spiritual journey, God is our ultimate Judge. He is not only the giver of the law but the one who perfectly upholds it. Unlike human judges, who may be flawed or biased, God’s judgments are pure and righteous, rooted in His divine nature. He knows the law inside and out because He is the law—His Word is the standard by which all things are measured.

God’s role as Judge is not just about determining guilt or innocence; it’s about His righteousness and holiness. As the one who upholds the law perfectly, He has the authority to judge because He is without sin. This sets Him apart from any earthly judge who, being human, is subject to flaws and failures. The fear of standing before a crooked judge who is guilty of the same crimes is a stark reminder of how unfit we are to judge others. When we judge others, we assume a role that belongs solely to God, and in doing so, we condemn ourselves.

Romans 2:1-3 warns us about the dangers of self-righteous judgment. When we judge others, we are, in essence, playing the role of God, forgetting that we too are sinners in need of grace. We cannot judge someone into the Kingdom of God, but we can love them into it. Judgment drives people away, but love draws them near. Our job is not to judge but to testify to God’s goodness and grace, pointing others to the one true Judge who offers forgiveness and salvation.

Prayer:
Lord, You alone are the righteous Judge. Help us to relinquish any desire to judge others and instead take up the mantle of witness. Give us the grace to testify to Your goodness and mercy, leading others to You with love rather than condemnation. Amen.
