Freedom for the Called
John 8:36 (NET)
So if the Son sets you free, you will be really free.
The essence of the Christian faith is freedom—freedom from sin, guilt, and the chains that once bound us. When Jesus calls us, He doesn’t just call us to follow Him; He calls us into a life of true freedom. This freedom is not merely the absence of external constraints but the deep, soul-liberating freedom that comes from being set free by the Son of God. It is a freedom that transforms us, empowers us, and enables us to live the life God intended.
The freedom Jesus offers is rooted in His victory over sin and death. Through His death on the cross and His resurrection, Jesus broke the power of sin and death over humanity. For those who accept His call, this means that the chains of addiction, fear, shame, and guilt no longer have the final say. In Galatians 5:1, Paul writes, "For freedom Christ has set us free; stand firm, therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery." This verse reminds us that our freedom in Christ is not something to be taken lightly. It is a precious gift that must be guarded and lived out daily.
However, living in this freedom requires us to continually align ourselves with Christ. The world offers many false freedoms—promises of liberation that ultimately lead to new forms of bondage. Whether it’s the pursuit of wealth, power, or pleasure, these things can trap us if we are not careful. True freedom is found in Christ alone, and it is maintained through a relationship with Him. Jesus Himself said in John 15:4, "Remain in me, and I will remain in you. Just as the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it remains in the vine, so neither can you unless you remain in me." This connection to Christ is what sustains our freedom and allows us to bear fruit in our lives.
As we experience the freedom that Christ offers, we are also called to share it with others. There are countless people who are still bound by sin and are desperate for the freedom that only Jesus can provide. We are called to be witnesses to this freedom, not only through our words but also through our lives. When others see the peace, joy, and liberty we have in Christ, it becomes a powerful testimony to the transformative power of the Gospel. Let us be diligent in sharing this message of freedom with those who need it most, pointing them to the One who can truly set them free.
Prayer:
Lord Jesus, thank You for the freedom You have given us through Your sacrifice on the cross. Help us to live in this freedom every day, standing firm in Your truth and not allowing the chains of sin to bind us again. Give us the courage to share this freedom with others, and use our lives as a testimony to Your power to set the captives free. May we always remain in You, the source of our true freedom. In Your holy name, we pray. Amen.
