The Gospel and Eternity
Matthew 28:19-20 (NIV)
“Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”
When we share the gospel, we must view it through the lens of eternity. Jesus’ Great Commission in Matthew 28:19-20 isn’t just a call to evangelize; it’s a directive to impact eternity. The stakes are high—eternity hangs in the balance for every soul we encounter. Understanding the eternal significance of the gospel compels us to share it with urgency and passion. This isn’t merely about improving someone’s current situation; it’s about securing their eternal destiny. Our mission is not just to make converts but to make disciples who will also carry the message of eternal hope.
Sharing the gospel in light of eternity means recognizing the profound impact our words and actions can have on someone's forever. Imagine a scenario where you have the opportunity to share a life-saving remedy with someone who is desperately ill. How would you approach that situation? With urgency, compassion, and conviction. The same mindset should apply when we share the gospel. We are offering the ultimate cure for the human condition—eternal life with God. Our approach should reflect the seriousness of the gift we are offering and the eternal difference it can make.
However, sharing the gospel in light of eternity also involves being sensitive to the Holy Spirit’s guidance. We must be mindful not only of the message but also of how and when to deliver it. The early church in Acts was diligent in their mission, but they were also led by the Spirit. They understood the importance of their task and sought God’s direction in their efforts. Similarly, we need to be in tune with the Holy Spirit, asking for His guidance to effectively communicate the gospel and to discern the right moments to speak. This ensures that our efforts are not in vain but are used to make an eternal impact.
Prayer:
Lord, help me to view the task of sharing the gospel through the lens of eternity. Give me a sense of urgency and passion to reach those who are lost and in need of Your salvation. Guide me by Your Holy Spirit, and let my words and actions reflect the eternal significance of the message I carry. Use me to make a lasting impact in the lives of others, and let Your kingdom be expanded through my efforts. Amen.
