Losing Everything
Matthew 16:25 (NIV)
“For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will find it.”
The pursuit of self-discovery and fulfillment can sometimes lead us down paths that leave us feeling empty and lost. Jesus’ words in Matthew 16:25 highlight a profound truth: in our quest to find ourselves, we might lose what truly matters if we seek fulfillment apart from Him. This paradox is central to understanding the nature of true life and purpose.
Consider the story of the prodigal son. He left his father’s home with the belief that happiness and self-discovery lay in living freely and indulging in pleasures. Yet, his journey led him to a place of utter despair. He lost his wealth, his friends, and his sense of identity. It was only when he reached rock bottom that he began to understand what he had truly lost and what he needed to find himself again.
In modern life, this pursuit often manifests as chasing after material success, relationships, or experiences, believing they will bring fulfillment. Many people invest everything in these pursuits, only to find themselves feeling hollow and unfulfilled. It’s a sobering realization that what we seek in our own strength can often leave us more lost than before.
Jesus calls us to a different path: one of surrender and trust in Him. By losing our lives in service and obedience to Him, we discover a deeper sense of purpose and true fulfillment. It’s in the act of giving ourselves fully to His will that we find the life He intended for us. Embracing this truth requires a shift in perspective from self-centered pursuits to a life centered on Christ.
Prayer:
Heavenly Father, we come before You acknowledging our desire for fulfillment and purpose. Help us to understand that true life is found in surrendering to Your will and purpose. Guide us to seek You above all else and to find our identity and satisfaction in You. May we let go of the empty pursuits that lead us astray and embrace the life You have promised. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
