The Ring

Ephesians 1:5 (NLT)
“God decided in advance to adopt us into his own family by bringing us to himself through Jesus Christ. This is what he wanted to do, and it gave him great pleasure.”

In the story of the prodigal son, the father’s gesture of placing a signet ring on his son’s finger is loaded with significance. The signet ring was more than just a piece of jewelry; it was a symbol of authority and belonging. It represented the son’s full reinstatement into the family and his role as a member with the father's authority and favor.

The signet ring in biblical times was used to seal documents, signify ownership, and establish authority. By giving the ring to his son, the father was affirming that the son had been fully restored to his previous status, despite his previous choices and mistakes. This act symbolizes the authority and identity that we receive through our relationship with God. Just as the son was given the authority of the father’s household, we are given authority and identity in Christ.

Ephesians 1:5 tells us that God, in His great love and pleasure, chose to adopt us into His family. This adoption is not a temporary arrangement but a permanent change in our status. When we come to God, He places His “signet ring” on us, symbolizing our new identity as His children, with all the rights and privileges that come with it.

Understanding the significance of this ring can transform how we see ourselves and our relationship with God. It’s a powerful reminder that we are not only forgiven but are also honored and trusted as members of God’s family, with all the authority and blessings that come with being His children.

Prayer:
Heavenly Father, thank You for adopting us into Your family and giving us a new identity in Christ. Help us to fully grasp the significance of the authority and privileges we have as Your children. May we live each day confident in our position and purpose within Your family, knowing that we are loved and valued by You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
