Hiding Behind the Baggage

1 Samuel 10:22 (NIV)
So they asked the Lord, ‘Where is he?’ And the Lord replied, ‘He is hiding among the baggage.

In life, we often struggle with Disposaphobia—the fear of letting go of the things that weigh us down. Just like Saul, who hid among the baggage, many of us find ourselves hiding behind the spiritual and emotional baggage we’ve accumulated over time. Saul was called by God to be king, yet he allowed fear and insecurity to cripple him, retreating to the baggage instead of stepping boldly into his destiny. The same is true for us. The fear of releasing the past—our pain, failures, and insecurities—can prevent us from fully stepping into God’s calling.

Disposaphobia isn’t just about physical clutter; it’s about hoarding spiritual baggage. We hold on to old wounds, past mistakes, and even the negative labels others have placed on us. Why? Because letting go requires trust and vulnerability. We tell ourselves that if we let go of these things, we might lose a part of ourselves or face rejection. But in reality, this baggage is what’s holding us back from God’s best. The longer we cling to it, the more we hide from the future God has designed for us.

Yet, God calls us out from behind the baggage, just as He called Saul. He doesn’t want us to live in hiding, burdened by the weight of our past. Jesus’ sacrifice has already made it possible for us to leave our baggage at the altar. We no longer need to carry the pain, fear, or insecurity. Instead, we can step into the freedom and purpose God has for us, unburdened and restored.

Prayer:
Lord, help me confront my own Disposaphobia—the fear of letting go. Give me the courage to lay my burdens down, trusting that You have a greater purpose for me. Free me from the baggage that keeps me hidden and help me step boldly into the destiny You’ve called me to. In Jesus’ name, amen.
