Seek Substance, Over Surface
Colossians 3:2 (NKJV)
“Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth.”
In our fast-paced, image-driven society, the temptation to prioritize surface-level appearances over deep, substantive faith is ever-present. Paul reminds us in Colossians to focus on the eternal and the spiritual rather than the fleeting and superficial. When we fixate on what can be seen—our outward appearance, social media profiles, or even the rituals of our faith—we risk missing the profound richness that comes from a genuine relationship with Christ. Substance is cultivated in the secret place, where our hearts are laid bare before God, allowing His truth to transform us.
Seeking substance requires intentionality. It calls us to engage deeply with Scripture, prayer, and community, fostering an environment where our faith can grow and flourish. In Proverbs 2:4-5, we are encouraged to seek wisdom as one would seek silver or hidden treasures. This pursuit leads us to understand the fear of the Lord and find the knowledge of God. It is through this pursuit of wisdom that we discover the richness of faith that transcends the superficiality of mere outward appearances.
Moreover, a faith grounded in substance empowers us to navigate life’s challenges with resilience. When our foundation is built on the truth of God’s Word and the reality of His presence in our lives, we become fortified against the pressures to conform to worldly standards. In a culture that often values style over substance, let us be a people marked by authenticity, depth, and an unwavering commitment to embodying the transformative power of Christ in our lives.
Prayer:
Heavenly Father, help us to prioritize substance over surface in our faith journey. Teach us to seek You wholeheartedly and to cultivate a deep, abiding relationship with You that transforms our lives and reflects Your glory. Amen.
