I Must Decrease, so that He may Increase
John 3:30 (NKJV)
“He must increase, but I must decrease.”
In a culture that often celebrates self-promotion and individual achievement, the call to decrease so that Christ may increase can feel counterintuitive. Yet, this principle is foundational to the Christian faith. John the Baptist articulated this profound truth, acknowledging that his purpose was to prepare the way for Jesus, not to elevate himself. As followers of Christ, we are called to embrace humility, allowing our lives to reflect His glory rather than our own. This requires a deliberate choice to prioritize His agenda over our desires.
Decreasing in our lives means relinquishing control and allowing God to reign. It involves letting go of our ambitions, fears, and insecurities, and trusting that God’s plans are greater than our own. When we surrender our will to Him, we create space for His Spirit to work through us. Galatians 2:20 expresses this beautifully: “I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me.” This radical shift in identity empowers us to live authentically and boldly, demonstrating the transformative power of Christ in our lives.
As we decrease, we allow the light of Christ to shine more brightly. Our lives become a testament to His grace and mercy, drawing others to Him. When we prioritize His presence, we find fulfillment and purpose beyond our understanding. In a world clamoring for attention and recognition, let us commit to the countercultural path of humility, making room for Christ to increase in our lives and in the lives of those around us.
Prayer:
Lord, teach us the value of decreasing so that You may increase in our lives. Help us to surrender our desires and ambitions to You, allowing Your light to shine through us. May our lives reflect Your glory and draw others closer to You. Amen.
