What's In Your Hand?
Exodus 4:2-3
"So the Lord said to him, 'What is that in your hand?' He said, 'A rod.' And He said, 'Throw it on the ground.' So he threw it on the ground, and it became a serpent; and Moses fled from it."
One of the most powerful lessons in serving is recognizing that God can use whatever we have. In Exodus 4, when God called Moses to lead the Israelites out of Egypt, Moses was hesitant. He felt inadequate, believing he didn’t have the tools or abilities to accomplish such a mighty task. But God asked him a simple question: "What is that in your hand?" The answer was a rod, something that seemed insignificant and ordinary. Yet, when Moses obeyed, that rod became a symbol of God’s power. This story reminds us that God doesn’t require us to have great talents or resources—He simply wants us to use what we have, no matter how small or insignificant it may seem.
Too often, we look at our own gifts, time, or resources and think they’re not enough to make a real difference. We may be tempted to believe that we don’t have the abilities, skills, or influence needed to serve God effectively. But God doesn’t ask for perfection; He asks for obedience. Just like Moses, we all have something in our hands that God can use. Whether it’s our time, our skills, our finances, or even our willingness to listen, God is ready to take what we offer and multiply it for His kingdom.
When we surrender what we have to God, He makes it bold. He can turn a simple rod into a tool of deliverance, a small act of kindness into a life-changing moment, or a humble offering into a blessing for many. It’s not about the size of what we have but the willingness to use it for His purposes. God can take the ordinary and make it extraordinary if we simply trust Him and step out in faith. So, whatever you hold, offer it to God, and watch Him use it to bring about His mighty works.
Prayer:
Father, thank You for reminding us that You can use whatever we have in our hands. Help us to surrender our gifts, time, and resources to You, knowing that You will multiply them for Your kingdom. Give us the courage to step out in faith and trust that You can take the ordinary and make it extraordinary. May we serve You with what we have, knowing that it is enough when we offer it to You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
