Influence Over Yourself

Genesis 4:7
"You will be accepted if you do what is right. But if you refuse to do what is right, then watch out! Sin is crouching at the door, eager to control you. But you must subdue it and be its master."

The power of saying “no” begins with ourselves. Before we can influence others or stand firm in our convictions, we must first have self-control. In the story of Daniel, we see a young man who exercised profound self-discipline. He made the choice to reject the king’s delicacies and wine, which symbolized much more than food—it represented an opportunity to compromise his values and submit to a foreign way of life. His decision to say “no” was an act of self-control that honored God.

This concept of self-control is rooted in the Bible’s teachings on sin. In Genesis 4:7, God speaks to Cain, warning him that sin is crouching at the door, eager to take control of him. This is a powerful image—sin is like a predator waiting for the moment we let down our guard. But God doesn’t leave us without a solution. He commands us to subdue sin and be its master, not the other way around.

Fasting is a tangible way to build our “no” muscle. By saying no to our flesh, whether it’s food, entertainment, or other distractions, we train ourselves to make godly choices. It strengthens our ability to resist temptation, helping us grow in spiritual maturity. The more we practice saying “no” to what the world offers, the stronger our “yes” becomes when it comes to the things of God.

When we choose self-control, we are taking responsibility for our lives and actions. Our decisions shape the direction of our lives, and by exercising the discipline of saying “no” to temporary desires, we gain greater influence over our hearts, minds, and actions. The power of your “no” is transformative—it helps you take control of yourself so you can live in alignment with God’s purpose.

Prayer:
Lord, thank You for the gift of self-control. Help us to recognize the areas of our lives where we need to say “no” to the things that pull us away from You. Strengthen us to resist the temptations of the world and grow in our ability to choose what honors You. Teach us to master our own desires so we can live in alignment with Your will. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
