The Power of Anointing
James 5:14 (NKJV)
Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord.
The power of anointing is one of the most significant expressions of God's divine touch on His people. In both the Old and New Testaments, anointing oil was used to consecrate individuals and objects to the service of God. It marked a distinction between the sacred and the ordinary, setting things apart for God's purpose. When the oil was poured, it was a declaration of ownership—signifying that the anointed person was now under God’s protection and blessing.
Anointing oil, as described in the Bible, was a blend of olive oil, myrrh, cinnamon, calamus, and cassia. While olive oil is the main base, each component plays a role in reflecting aspects of our spiritual walk. The pressing of the olive symbolizes the pressure we often face in life, yet when we stand firm in Christ, we are not crushed, but refined for His purposes. As Paul wrote in 2 Corinthians 4:8-12, though we are "pressed on every side," we are not "crushed." In the same way, the pressing of the olive results in oil that is pure and ready for use in God's kingdom.
The anointing is not just a ritual; it is an invitation for God's presence to take root in our lives. It symbolizes being set apart and consecrated for His purpose. Every time we experience the power of God's anointing, we are reminded that we belong to Him. This power brings healing, restoration, and provision, as we see in James 5:15, where it states that the "prayer of faith will save the sick, and the Lord will raise him up."
Prayer:
Father God, we thank You for the power of anointing, that through it, we are set apart for Your purpose and marked as Your own. We ask for Your anointing to fall fresh on us today, to empower us for service and to bring healing and restoration into every area of our lives. May Your presence be evident in all we do, and may Your divine touch continue to transform us. In Jesus' name, Amen.
