Laying on of Hands
1 Timothy 4:14 (NKJV)
"Do not neglect the gift that is in you, which was given to you by prophecy with the laying on of the hands of the eldership."
The laying on of hands is a profound and significant practice in the Bible. It carries the weight of both spiritual impartation and blessing. This act has its roots in both the Old and New Testaments, where it was used to confer blessings, commission individuals for service, and even impart healing. It is through the laying on of hands that God's anointing is transferred, not just as a symbolic gesture, but as an active release of the Holy Spirit into the life of the individual being prayed over.
In the early church, the laying on of hands was a regular practice, as we see in the Scriptures. In Acts 13:3, the apostles fasted, prayed, and laid hands on Paul and Barnabas, setting them apart for the work God had called them to. This moment was an intentional, sacred act that marked the beginning of their mission to spread the gospel. Similarly, when Timothy received his gift through the laying on of hands, it was a divine affirmation and empowerment for his ministry.
This act is not just a physical touch; it is a spiritual transaction. It’s a moment where God’s presence meets our lives in a tangible way. Whether it’s for healing, impartation of spiritual gifts, or commissioning for ministry, the laying on of hands signifies a divine moment of grace and empowerment. It is an act that reminds us of the power of community and agreement, and how God works through His body to fulfill His purposes on earth.
Prayer:
Heavenly Father, thank You for the sacred practice of laying on of hands. We recognize the power and significance it holds in the life of the believer. We ask that You would empower us with Your Spirit, that we may walk in the gifts You have given us. May we continue to walk in Your calling, being sensitive to Your anointing and the divine moments You create in our lives. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
