God's Love

1 John 4:9-10 (NIV)
"This is how God showed His love among us: He sent His one and only Son into the world that we might live through Him. This is love: not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins."

On this Valentine’s Day, we take a break from our Super Bowl analogies to reflect on love—God’s love. The world celebrates love in many forms today, from romantic gestures to heartfelt exchanges of affection, but as believers, we know that true love begins with God. 1 John 4:9-10 reveals the profound truth that God’s love for us is not based on our actions or worthiness, but it is a love that reaches beyond ourselves. It is unconditional, sacrificial, and unending. It is the perfect love that we are called to both receive and share with others.

God’s love for us is not defined by emotions or temporary feelings. It is demonstrated in action. In sending His Son Jesus to die for our sins, God showed us the greatest form of love: sacrificial love. Valentine’s Day might be filled with roses, chocolates, and cards, but the love God demonstrated is the one that never fades. It’s not contingent on gifts or performance—it’s rooted in grace. When we look at the cross, we see the ultimate act of love, and it’s a love that calls us to love others in the same way.

In the context of Valentine’s Day, we celebrate human love, but let’s remember that every form of love we experience—whether familial, platonic, or romantic—should point back to the love of Christ. As we show affection to those around us, let’s remember that the love we share is a reflection of God’s love for us. It’s a reminder that love is not just about feeling good in the moment, but about sacrificing for the well-being of others, just as Christ did for us. On this special day, let’s take a moment to reflect on the depth of God's love for us, and consider how we can live out that love every day.

Prayer:
Father, thank You for the incredible love You have shown us through Jesus. We thank You for Your sacrificial love that never fails. Help us to love others in the same way You have loved us, and may our hearts be filled with gratitude and compassion. Amen.
