Relationship Over Information

John 10:27 (NIV)
My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me.

There’s a deep desire in every believer to hear from God, but sometimes it feels like we’re just not getting through. We may read the Bible, pray, and seek God’s guidance, but His voice seems distant. It’s a struggle that many face, and often, it’s because we’re approaching our relationship with God as one of mere information rather than intimacy.

The Bible is more than a historical record, a collection of rules, or a textbook for life. It’s a living document, infused with the very breath of God, meant to reveal not just facts about Him, but an invitation into a personal, transformative relationship. As John 10:27 reminds us, "My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me." Jesus doesn’t just want us to know about Him—He wants us to know Him, intimately, in every moment of our lives.

But how do we move from mere intellectual knowledge to truly hearing God’s voice? The first step is realizing that hearing God is not just about information; it’s about relationship. In Genesis 1:3, when God said, “Let there be light,” He was not just giving a command—He was making space for connection, revealing His character and His desire to engage with His creation. God has been speaking since the very beginning, and He continues to speak to His people today. The question isn’t whether or not God is speaking; it’s whether or not we’re positioning ourselves to listen.

To hear from God, we must first acknowledge that our relationship with Him goes beyond intellectual understanding. Knowledge of God can be powerful, but wisdom—true understanding—only comes when we listen and respond to His voice.

In the busyness of life, it’s easy for God’s voice to get drowned out by the noise of the world. We’re bombarded with messages from all directions—social media, news outlets, our own internal thoughts, and even well-meaning friends and family. But when we quiet the distractions, when we intentionally create space to listen, we make room for God to speak. And He will speak. His Word is alive and active, sharper than any double-edged sword (Hebrews 4:12), cutting through the noise and piercing our hearts. But we have to be willing to hear, and more importantly, to respond.

Before praying the following prayer, simply ask God to speak and take the next five minutes to sit in silence and LISTEN!

Prayer:
Heavenly Father, We come to You with open hearts, eager to hear Your voice. Forgive us for the times when we’ve allowed distractions and noise to drown out Your Word. Help us posture ourselves to listen attentively and respond with obedience. Teach us to value our relationship with You more than mere information. May Your voice guide us, shape us, and lead us into a deeper, more intimate relationship with You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
