Posture, Not Proximity

1 Samuel 3:9 (NIV)
So Eli told Samuel, “Go and lie down, and if he calls you, say, ‘Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening.’” So Samuel went and lay down in his place.

In our fast-paced, noisy world, it’s easy to assume that simply being near God is enough to hear His voice. We might attend church regularly, read our Bibles, and pray fervently, but still feel disconnected from the direction we long to receive. The issue isn’t proximity, but posture. Just as Samuel struggled to hear God’s voice, we too must learn the importance of being in the right posture to listen.

Samuel’s story offers profound insight into the importance of posture in hearing from God. In 1 Samuel 3, the young boy kept hearing his name called in the night, but each time he assumed it was Eli, his mentor. It wasn’t until Eli instructed him to lie down and prepare his heart to listen, saying, “Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening,” that Samuel heard God clearly. Samuel’s physical proximity to Eli and his surroundings wasn’t the issue—it was his readiness and posture to hear from God. And when he positioned himself in the right way, God spoke directly into his life.

We too need to be intentional about our posture when approaching God. Too often, we come before God distracted, preoccupied with our own thoughts or overwhelmed by life’s circumstances. While God can speak to us at any moment, the question is whether we’re truly listening. Our posture isn’t just about physical stillness; it’s about cultivating a heart of humility, expectation, and surrender. When we humble ourselves before God, acknowledging that we don’t have all the answers and that we need His guidance, we open ourselves up to hearing Him clearly.

Just as Samuel had to position himself in humility to hear God’s call, we must create space in our hearts to receive from God. Hebrews 4:12 reminds us that God’s Word is “alive and active.” But for His Word to transform us, we need to approach it with the right heart. The Bible isn’t merely a book of facts to be memorized; it’s God’s voice speaking directly into our lives. We must posture ourselves with reverence, expecting that God will speak, and be ready to listen when He does. Just as we prepare for meaningful conversations with friends and loved ones, we must prepare ourselves to hear from the Creator of the universe.

To hear from God, we must first create the conditions for that communication to happen. It’s not about how close we are physically, but whether we’re in the right spiritual posture. Are we listening for His voice in a world full of distractions? Are we humble enough to hear His call, even when it challenges our understanding or expectations? When we position ourselves in humility and expectancy, we will begin to hear God’s voice more clearly and deeply than ever before.

Prayer:
Father, We come before You with open hearts, ready to listen. Help us to quiet the noise in our lives and posture ourselves to hear from You. Teach us to come before You with humility, surrendering our own desires and expectations. We want to hear Your voice clearly and follow Your leading. May our hearts burn with anticipation for the guidance You offer. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
