The God Who Speaks

Luke 24:32 (NIV)
They asked each other, “Were not our hearts burning within us while he talked with us on the road and opened the Scriptures to us?”

God is not silent. In fact, from the very beginning, He has been speaking to His people. Yet, so many believers struggle with the idea of hearing from God, unsure if it’s really His voice or just their own thoughts. But the truth is, God desires to communicate with us, and we should expect to hear from Him—not because we are worthy, but because He is relational and loves to speak to His children.

Luke 24:32 provides us with a beautiful example of what it’s like when we truly hear from God. The disciples, walking with Jesus on the road to Emmaus, didn’t realize who He was until He opened the Scriptures to them. As He spoke, their hearts "burned" within them, a clear sign that something extraordinary was happening. This encounter wasn’t just about hearing words—it was about the presence and power of God coming alive in their hearts. It wasn’t a matter of proximity to Jesus; it was the intimate, life-changing communication between them and the risen Savior. They didn’t just hear a message; they felt the power of God speaking to them in a way that transformed their hearts.

The same is true for us today. God is still speaking, and His voice has the power to stir our hearts and transform our lives. The question isn’t whether God is speaking—it’s whether we are in a position to hear. So often, we allow distractions and busyness to drown out God’s voice, thinking that hearing from Him is an elusive experience reserved only for certain people or moments. But God longs for us to expect His voice in our lives, to anticipate that He will speak to us in ways that are personal, intimate, and transformative. When we make space for God to speak—whether through His Word, prayer, or moments of stillness—we can expect our hearts to burn with His truth.

Why do we sometimes doubt God’s voice? Part of the struggle lies in our own hearts. We’re often too distracted or too proud to listen. But God is gracious, and He invites us to humbly come before Him, ready to hear. Expectation is key. When we expect God to speak, we are opening ourselves to receive His voice. And just as He did with the disciples, He will reveal Himself to us, filling our hearts with the burning passion of His presence.

God’s desire is to speak directly to us. He doesn’t want us to wonder if we can hear from Him—He wants us to recognize that His voice is as real and present as ever. We should never approach our time with God with hesitation, but rather with anticipation and confidence that He is ready to reveal Himself to us. Just as the disciples experienced on the road to Emmaus, when we hear from God, our hearts should burn with the truth of who He is and what He is saying.

Prayer:
Lord, We thank You for the promise that You are always speaking. Forgive us for the times we’ve allowed distractions to prevent us from hearing Your voice. We ask for hearts that are open and eager to hear from You. Help us to expect Your presence in our lives and to recognize Your voice when You speak. May our hearts burn with Your truth, and may we follow Your leading wherever it takes us. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
