The Advocate
John 14:26 (NIV)
"But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you."
The Holy Spirit is often described as the Advocate, a term that encapsulates His role as a helper, counselor, and guide in our lives. Much like a mentor or a coach, the Holy Spirit walks alongside us, teaching us the ways of God and leading us in the truth. Jesus promises that through the Holy Spirit, we are not left to navigate life on our own, but have a divine guide who will direct our steps, even in the most challenging of times.
One of the most powerful illustrations of this comes from the life of John Wesley, the founder of the Methodist movement. Wesley experienced an extraordinary encounter with the Holy Spirit that changed the trajectory of his ministry and life. He described his heart "strangely warmed" when the Spirit moved powerfully in him, prompting him to preach the message of salvation with a fervor he had never known. The Holy Spirit, like a spiritual coach, equips and empowers us for the work God calls us to, pushing us toward growth, insight, and action in a way we cannot do alone.
In the same way, when I think about learning new skills, I remember a time when my son Carson and I took up surfing. We hired a coach who taught us the fundamentals. At first, we struggled, but with the coach’s expertise, we quickly learned to catch the waves. I later tried surfing on my own, and the difference was night and day. Without the coach's help, everything felt off. The Holy Spirit works in a similar way in our lives—guiding us, giving us that extra push, helping us catch the wave of God's will when we may feel overwhelmed or lost. He is not just a distant instructor; He is present and active, intimately involved in our lives. Why would we want to navigate life without His divine guidance?
Prayer:
Holy Spirit, thank You for being our Advocate, the One who teaches, guides, and reminds us of God's truth. We invite You into every part of our lives, asking that You would lead us step by step, helping us to understand and apply Your Word in our hearts. May we never take Your guidance for granted, but instead, rely on Your wisdom in all things. Empower us to walk in the fullness of Your presence today. Amen.
