Hearing The Holy Spirit
John 16:13 (NIV)
“But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth.”
In a world filled with constant noise—our own inner thoughts, the voices of others, the influence of media and culture—it can be difficult to discern the voice of the Holy Spirit. We are often surrounded by competing messages, some of which challenge us, distract us, or lead us astray. Yet, Jesus assures us that the Holy Spirit will guide us into all truth. He is our advocate, helping us navigate the complexities of life by making God’s voice clear in the midst of confusion.
One powerful example of this comes from the life of the prophet Elijah. In 1 Kings 19, after a mighty victory over the prophets of Baal, Elijah is fleeing from Queen Jezebel, overwhelmed and discouraged. God instructs him to stand on the mountain, where a mighty wind, an earthquake, and a fire pass by. Yet, God is not in any of them. It is only in the gentle whisper that Elijah encounters the presence of God. This story reminds us that God’s voice is often subtle and gentle, not forceful or loud. In the chaos of life, we must learn to tune in to that whisper, to recognize the Spirit’s guidance even when the world around us is shouting.
The late C.S. Lewis often wrote about the importance of quieting the soul to hear God’s voice. In his book The Screwtape Letters, Lewis famously illustrated how the enemy uses distractions and busyness to keep us from hearing the truth. In a similar way, the Holy Spirit works to help us discern God’s voice, but we must be willing to make space to listen. Whether through prayer, Scripture, or simply quiet reflection, we must intentionally seek out His voice and allow it to guide our decisions.
The Holy Spirit is not only a guide to truth but also a filter, helping us discern what is of God and what is not. In our daily lives, we must remember that not every voice we hear is one we should follow. By aligning ourselves with the Holy Spirit, we can navigate the noise around us and make decisions that reflect God’s will for our lives.
Prayer:
Holy Spirit, we thank You for Your guidance in our lives. Help us to discern Your voice amidst the noise and distractions around us. Teach us to listen for Your gentle whisper, and give us the wisdom to follow where You lead. May we grow in our ability to hear and respond to Your truth, trusting that You are always with us. Amen.
