Discerning Godly Counsel
Proverbs 11:14 (NKJV)
"Where there is no counsel, the people fall; But in the multitude of counselors there is safety."
In life, we often find ourselves seeking advice from various voices—family, friends, or even social media influencers. However, when it comes to hearing God’s voice and making decisions aligned with His will, the voices we choose to listen to are of utmost importance. The story of King Rehoboam in 1 Kings 12:6-11 serves as a powerful reminder of this truth. Rehoboam, when faced with a crucial decision, rejected the wisdom of his father’s trusted advisors in favor of the advice from his younger peers. The result was disastrous for Israel, as the kingdom was divided and the people suffered. This story highlights the need for discernment in who we choose to listen to, especially when seeking guidance for our lives.
Godly counsel comes from voices that are rooted in His Word and lead us toward His will. Proverbs 15:22 states, "Plans fail for lack of counsel, but with many advisers they succeed." When we are faced with difficult decisions, it’s essential to seek wisdom from those who know God’s Word and who have a heart for our spiritual growth. These voices will not simply tell us what we want to hear, but they will point us toward truth, challenge us to grow, and encourage us to align our decisions with God’s purpose. Surrounding ourselves with godly counsel is a safeguard against poor choices, helping us to stay on track with God’s plan.
Discerning the right voices requires intentionality. We must ask ourselves whether the advice we’re receiving aligns with Scripture and leads us closer to God. In a world full of opinions, it’s easy to be swayed by those who speak to our desires or fears. But when we choose to listen to voices that reflect God’s truth, we are making a wise decision that will protect us from harm and lead us into the fullness of His will for our lives. Let us be humble enough to seek godly counsel and wise enough to discern which voices to listen to, trusting that God will guide us through them.
Prayer:
Lord, thank You for the wisdom You provide through the counsel of others. Help us to surround ourselves with voices that speak Your truth, lead us toward Your will, and encourage us to grow in faith. Give us discernment to hear Your voice through those who love us and desire Your best for us. May we trust You in every decision and listen to the counsel You’ve placed in our lives. Amen.
