The Key to Receiving Godly Wisdom
James 4:6 (NIV)
"But he gives us more grace. That is why Scripture says: 'God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble.'"
Humility is often a characteristic we don't think about when it comes to receiving wisdom, but it plays a crucial role. In the story of King Rehoboam (1 Kings 12:6-11), his pride and insecurity led him to reject godly counsel. Instead of humbling himself and listening to the wisdom of those who had been through leadership challenges before him, he chose to listen to the voices of his peers, who fueled his ego. The result was disastrous—Rehoboam’s pride led Israel into division and turmoil. This story shows us that without humility, we miss the opportunity to receive the wisdom God wants to give us.
Humility allows us to admit that we don’t have all the answers and that we need help. James 4:6 reminds us that God gives grace to the humble, but opposes the proud. When we approach others for advice with a humble heart, we open ourselves to hearing from God through them. Whether it’s a mentor, a friend, or a spiritual leader, godly counsel can only be received if we are willing to set aside our pride and be teachable. It’s not about finding someone who will tell us what we want to hear, but someone who will speak God’s truth, even if it challenges us.
The key to receiving Godly wisdom is to stay humble enough to listen, even when it’s difficult. Proverbs 12:15 says, “The way of fools seems right to them, but the wise listen to advice.” When we are willing to humble ourselves and accept correction, we grow in wisdom and understanding. Let’s be mindful of our pride and ask God to help us remain humble in our pursuit of His guidance.
Prayer:
Lord, thank You for the grace You give to the humble. Help us to recognize our need for Your wisdom and to approach others with humility. Give us the strength to set aside our pride and listen to the counsel You’ve placed in our lives. May we grow in wisdom as we submit to Your guidance and embrace the lessons You want to teach us. Amen.
