When Counsel Doesn't Align With Desire

Proverbs 11:14 (NKJV)
"Where there is no counsel, the people fall; But in the multitude of counselors there is safety."

There are moments when we face decisions and God's counsel doesn’t align with our desires. We may want something that feels right to us, but God’s guidance points us in a different direction. This is exactly what happened to King Rehoboam in 1 Kings 12:6-11. The people came to him, asking for a lighter burden, and he consulted the wise elders who gave him counsel that would have benefited the people and strengthened his reign. But instead, Rehoboam, driven by his own pride and insecurity, chose to follow the advice of his younger peers, which led to division and suffering for the nation. When we choose to ignore godly counsel because it doesn’t fit our desires, we risk missing out on God’s best for our lives.

Proverbs 11:14 reminds us that "in the multitude of counselors there is safety." When we face decisions, it’s crucial to surround ourselves with wise, godly voices who can speak truth into our lives—even when it’s not what we want to hear. Godly counsel may challenge our plans, but it leads us into alignment with His purpose. The key to responding well when God’s counsel doesn’t align with our desires is to submit to His will, trusting that His plan is better than our own.

It takes humility to acknowledge that God’s way may be different than our own, but it’s in submitting to His will that we find peace and purpose. When we respond to God’s guidance with trust and obedience, we open ourselves to the blessings that come from following His perfect plan. Even when God’s counsel is hard to accept, we must remember that He sees the bigger picture and is always working for our good.

Prayer:
Lord, help us to trust Your counsel, even when it doesn’t align with our desires. Give us the humility to listen to Your voice, surround us with godly wisdom, and guide our hearts to submit to Your will. Thank You for Your perfect plans, and help us to walk in obedience, knowing that You are leading us to something greater. Amen.
