The Heart of a Teachable Spirit

Proverbs 12:15 (NIV)
"The way of fools seems right to them, but the wise listen to advice."

Receiving correction can be one of the hardest things to accept, especially when it confronts our pride or challenges our current thinking. However, Proverbs 12:15 teaches us that "the wise listen to advice," and possessing a teachable spirit is essential for our spiritual growth. When we resist correction, we close ourselves off from opportunities to grow in wisdom. The truth is, correction is not about rejection—it’s about refinement. God uses others, through the Holy Spirit, to guide us into deeper understanding, and our ability to receive correction can shape the direction of our lives in powerful ways.

A teachable spirit requires humility. It involves recognizing that we don’t have all the answers and that God often speaks to us through the counsel of others. Whether it’s a friend, a mentor, or even a difficult situation, God allows moments of correction to help us grow. Hebrews 12:6 reminds us that "the Lord disciplines those he loves," and in the same way, correction is an expression of His love for us. Rather than viewing correction as an attack or criticism, we must learn to embrace it as an opportunity for growth and transformation.

A heart open to correction is one that is willing to change and mature. It’s easy to become defensive or dismissive when someone points out areas where we need to improve, but God wants us to be open to His shaping hand. When we listen to wise counsel and receive correction in love, we move closer to the person God has called us to be. Let us remember that correction, though often difficult, is one of the greatest tools God uses to refine our hearts and lives.

Prayer:
Lord, thank You for Your loving correction. Help us to remain teachable and humble, ready to receive the wisdom You offer through others. Give us the strength to accept correction as a sign of Your love and the courage to grow through it. May we continue to learn and mature in our walk with You. Amen.
