Standing In The Gap

Exodus 32:11–12 (NIV)
“But Moses sought the favor of the Lord his God… ‘Turn from your fierce anger; relent and do not bring disaster on your people.’”

The Israelites had just turned their backs on God. After all He had done for them, they molded a golden calf and bowed in worship. The anger of the Lord burned hot, and judgment was coming. But one man stood between God and destruction—Moses. He didn’t plead their innocence. He didn’t excuse their rebellion. He simply stood in the gap and begged God to show mercy.

That kind of intercession is rare, costly, and powerful. Moses wasn’t fighting for his own survival—he was risking everything for people who didn’t even know they needed saving. That’s what true spiritual leadership looks like: the willingness to carry a burden that isn’t yours, to pray when others won’t, and to fight for people who are far from God.

You might have someone in your life who is wandering, making destructive choices, or outright rejecting the things of God. They may not be praying for themselves—but you can. You can stand in the gap like Moses did. Your prayers matter. Your faith matters. Your voice lifted in their defense may be the very thing that delays judgment and releases mercy.

Intercession isn’t glamorous—but it’s sacred. It’s where heaven hears the cries of someone who refuses to let another soul go without a fight.

Prayer:
Lord, make me an intercessor. Give me the courage to stand in the gap for people who can’t or won’t pray for themselves. Help me carry their names to You, even when I don’t see change. Let my prayers be full of faith and compassion. Have mercy, God—and use me to be a voice of grace. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
