How Do You Come to Church?

Philippians 2:3-4 (NIV)
“Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.”

In our spiritual walk, it’s easy to become so fixated on our own needs that we forget the very purpose of the church: to serve others. This is not to say we should neglect our own spiritual health, but if we come into church spiritually starving, the focus will inevitably shift to us. We will become preoccupied with “getting fed” rather than being conduits of healing for those around us.

In Mark 2:1-12, when the paralyzed man was lowered through the roof, it wasn’t his own initiative that brought him to Jesus. It was the faith of his friends who were willing to serve him by carrying him to Jesus. Their selflessness is what led to his miraculous healing. The church should operate in this same spirit of selflessness—always looking for opportunities to help others encounter Jesus. The church isn’t meant to be a place where we simply receive; it’s a hospital for the broken, a place where we are called to bring others to Jesus, even if it means getting a little uncomfortable along the way.

When we approach church with a spiritually depleted mindset, we often end up making it all about our own needs, missing the chance to be a blessing to someone else. Instead, let us enter with eyes open to the needs around us. There are hurting people, broken people, and spiritually hungry people in our midst, waiting for someone to help bring them to the Savior.

It’s not about waiting for others to meet our needs—it’s about being the hands and feet of Jesus, carrying the weight for others when they can’t carry themselves. Let’s remember that the greatest moments in church are not when we get something for ourselves, but when we help others encounter the transformative power of Jesus.

Prayer:
Father, help me to come into Your house with a heart of service. May I never be so spiritually depleted that I miss the opportunity to serve others. Open my eyes to those who are hurting, and empower me to carry them to Your feet. Let my life be a reflection of selflessness, as I look to the needs of others before my own. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
