Dealing with Disappointment
John 11:40
"Then Jesus said, 'Did I not tell you that if you believe, you will see the glory of God?'"
Disappointment often arises when we feel like things aren’t going our way or when our hopes don’t line up with God’s timing. Martha, in John 11:40, had just expressed her deep disappointment to Jesus after her brother Lazarus had died. Her faith had been strong, but the delay in Jesus' arrival left her confused and grieving. Yet Jesus, in His gentle way, reminded her of a powerful truth: "Did I not tell you that if you believe, you will see the glory of God?"
Martha’s disappointment was real, and it was rooted in the belief that if Jesus had been there earlier, things would have been different. She had already witnessed Jesus perform miracles, but her limited understanding of the situation clouded her ability to see the greater miracle He was about to perform. Jesus was inviting her, not just to believe in a miracle, but to believe in the glory of God, which transcends our limited expectations.
We, too, often struggle with disappointment when our expectations don’t align with God’s plan. We may pray, wait, and hope for something specific, only to feel let down when things don’t unfold as we imagined. But God’s glory is bigger than our disappointment. It’s beyond our understanding and our timeline. Just as Jesus raised Lazarus from the dead, He is capable of bringing life to our dead dreams, relationships, and situations. He wants us to believe in His power, not just in what we expect from Him, but in the glory He wants to reveal through our struggles.
In times of disappointment, we can remember that God’s glory is being revealed even when we don’t see it. Just as Jesus called Lazarus out of the tomb, He can bring life and hope to areas of our lives that seem impossible. It’s in these moments of disappointment that we are invited to believe—because in believing, we will see God’s glory.
Prayer:
Lord, help us to trust You in our moments of disappointment. When things don’t go as we planned, remind us of Your greater glory. Help us to believe that You are at work, even when we can’t see it, and that You will reveal Your power in ways we never expected. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
