The Dangers of Becoming Lax
Matthew 3:8 ESV
“Bear fruit in keeping with repentance.”
After the moment of repentance, many of us experience a season of comfort. This is the stage where things are stable, and life feels good. We begin to take God’s blessings for granted, feeling as though we’ve “arrived.” But the danger of comfort lies in its subtlety. We begin to relax, become complacent in our spiritual practices, and stop pushing ourselves to grow closer to God.
Comfort can lead us to forget the urgency of our relationship with Christ. When life is easy, we may start to neglect prayer, Bible study, and fellowship. It’s easy to forget how much we need God when everything seems fine. The comfort we feel can lull us into a spiritual slumber, leading us further away from our initial zeal. This comfort can create a false sense of security, making it harder to recognize when we begin slipping into the next stages of complacency and coldness.
But God’s Word calls us to bear fruit that aligns with repentance. True repentance isn’t just a one-time decision—it’s a lifestyle. As we live in the reality of God’s grace, we must continually challenge ourselves to avoid spiritual comfort zones. To stay sharp and spiritually vibrant, we must keep pressing forward, not allowing comfort to breed complacency.
Prayer:
Heavenly Father, thank You for the peace and blessings You provide. Help us to not become too comfortable in our faith but to remain diligent in pursuing You. Protect us from complacency, and give us the strength to continue growing in our relationship with You, no matter how comfortable life may seem. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
