Coldness

Revelation 3:15-16 ESV
“I know your works: you are neither cold nor hot. Would that you were either cold or hot! So, because you are lukewarm, and neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of my mouth.”

Coldness is the result of complacency, where we no longer feel the warmth of God’s presence in our lives. When we slip into coldness, we attend church, participate in worship, and go through the motions, but our hearts are distant. We no longer engage with God with the same fervor as we once did. This stage is dangerous because we may not even realize how far we’ve drifted. Coldness doesn’t happen overnight; it creeps in slowly, often unnoticed.

Jesus warns us against being lukewarm, neither hot nor cold. In this state, we become ineffective, unable to influence others or experience the full power of God in our lives. Coldness dulls our senses to the Holy Spirit’s prompting. We stop responding to conviction, and sin becomes easier to ignore. This is a dangerous place to be because it’s often the hardest to recognize. We might convince ourselves that we are “fine” when, in reality, we have lost our first love.

To break free from coldness, we must recognize it for what it is—spiritual apathy. The only remedy for this is to return to our first love, to rekindle our passion for God, and to allow His Spirit to fill us once again. We must consciously choose to pursue Him, even when the warmth of His presence feels distant. The fire can always be reignited.

Prayer:
Father, we acknowledge the times we’ve grown cold and indifferent toward You. Forgive us for becoming complacent and lukewarm in our faith. Ignite our hearts once again with a passion for You, and draw us close to Your presence. Help us to be on fire for You, living each day with a heart full of love and devotion. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
