Peace in Proximity

Luke 13:34 (NIV)
“Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those sent to you, how often I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, and you were not willing.”

The heart of God has always been to draw us near, not to push us away. Jesus lamented over Jerusalem—not because of their sin alone, but because of their unwillingness to come close. His desire was to gather them, to shelter them, to be their protection. And yet, they resisted. They wanted the benefits of God without the closeness to God. We often fall into the same trap—wanting peace without repentance, security without surrender, blessing without proximity.

But Jesus doesn’t just offer a place to hide—He offers Himself. Like a mother hen stretches out her wings to cover her chicks, He extends His grace to those who come near. That shelter is not automatic; it’s relational. It’s the result of a heart that repents and returns. Under His wings, we find not just forgiveness but refuge—a covering for the storms we can’t see coming. It’s not the absence of trouble that marks God’s people—it’s the presence of peace in the midst of it.

This picture of divine covering shows us something deeper: protection is not found in a change of circumstances, but in a change of position—a posture of nearness to God. When we stay close to Him, we are not promised immunity from life’s storms, but we are promised presence. That’s what makes the difference. Many people go through the same storms, but proximity to God determines how deeply the winds affect your soul.

Don’t resist the call to come under His wings. The shelter is not for the perfect—it’s for the willing. And the closer you stay to His heart, the more you’ll discover that peace isn’t circumstantial; it’s positional. Repentance draws us into that position—not just as an act of confession, but as a lifestyle of surrender and intimacy.

Prayer:
Jesus, You long to gather me, and I don’t want to resist. Teach me to run to You—not just in the storm, but every single day. Thank You for the shelter You offer under Your wings. Draw me near, keep me close, and help me to live in the peace that comes from proximity to Your presence. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
