Not Every Blessing is From God

Ephesians 1:3 (NIV)
“Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ.”

We live in a world that equates blessing with bank accounts, applause, and upward mobility. But not every full schedule is a sign of favor. Not every financial gain is a gift from God. Sometimes, the world can offer you “blessings” that actually lead you further from God—not closer. Just because something feels good doesn’t mean it’s from Him. And just because life looks successful doesn’t mean your soul is secure.

Under the old covenant, obedience often led to material blessing, and disobedience invited curses (see Deuteronomy 28). But in Christ, the lens shifts. The New Testament moves the focus from the temporal to the eternal. In Ephesians 1:3, Paul says we are blessed in heavenly realms with spiritual blessings. That means our most meaningful blessings are not what we can spend or touch, but what we carry within: peace in chaos, joy in sorrow, righteousness in brokenness, and security in storms.

The world’s blessings are fragile—economic downturns, shifting opinions, and moral compromise can take them away in an instant. But the blessings of God are rooted in His character, not our circumstances. As Jesus said, the wise build on rock, not sand. One will stand through the storm; the other crumbles when the winds shift. Living close to God may not always look successful by earthly standards, but it secures something far more valuable—eternal stability and intimacy with Him.

Jim Elliot once said, “He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep to gain what he cannot lose.” That is the posture of a heart living under the right kind of blessing. Don’t chase the appearance of favor—stay in the presence of the Father. That’s where the real blessing is found.

Prayer:
God, help me not to mistake worldly success for spiritual blessing. Teach me to value what You value and to desire the eternal more than the temporary. Strip away anything that pulls me from Your presence, and give me eyes to see Your blessing in the heavenly places. I want what lasts. I want You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
