Guard Your Progress
Nehemiah 4:21-23 (NIV)
“So we continued the work with half the men holding spears, from the first light of dawn till the stars came out. At that time I also said to the people, ‘Have every man and his helper stay inside Jerusalem at night, so that they can serve us as guards by night and workers by day.’ Neither I nor my brothers nor my men nor the guards with me took off our clothes; each had his weapon, even when he went for water.”
Nehemiah’s task was monumental, and so was the opposition. To protect the work, Nehemiah took extra precautions to guard the progress that had already been made. Not only were the workers building by day, but they also served as guards at night. The enemies surrounding them were relentless, but Nehemiah and his people were vigilant, understanding that the progress they had made was worth protecting. They were not only focused on completing the wall but also on safeguarding the work they had done.
In our lives, we must take the same approach when it comes to guarding our progress. It’s easy to make strides toward our goals—whether they are personal, spiritual, or relational—but without vigilance, we can lose what we’ve worked so hard to build. The enemy doesn’t just want to stop us from moving forward; he wants to tear down everything we’ve built. But we must remain watchful, protecting our progress with prayer, persistence, and discernment.
Nehemiah’s commitment to guarding the work serves as a reminder that we cannot afford to become complacent. We must actively protect the spiritual, emotional, and relational walls we’ve built. This requires intentionality, staying alert, and never allowing the enemy to have access to what God is doing in our lives.
Prayer:
Lord, thank You for the reminder to guard the progress we’ve made. Help us to stay vigilant in protecting the work You are doing in our lives and in our families. Give us the strength and wisdom to defend what is good, and help us to remain focused on Your mission, no matter the opposition. In Jesus' name, Amen.
