Trading Comfort For The Cross
Luke 9:23 (NIV)
Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me.
Jesus never said following Him would be comfortable. He said it would be worth it. He didn’t call us to a life of ease—He called us to take up a cross, not a cushion. Yet, in our comfort-saturated culture, many of us have grown allergic to difficulty. We equate blessing with convenience and assume that discomfort means something is wrong. But Jesus redefined greatness through sacrifice. To walk with Him is to walk away from what’s easy and into what’s eternal.
We’ve trained ourselves to reach for relief instead of resolve. But the cross isn’t something we wear—it’s something we carry. It’s the weight of obedience when it costs us. It’s the decision to forgive when it would feel better to hold a grudge. It’s choosing the narrow way when the wide road looks more inviting. The world says, “Protect your comfort.” Jesus says, “Lay it down and follow Me.”
When you do, you’ll find what Jesus promised: joy that goes deeper than your situation, strength that outlasts your pain, and peace that doesn’t depend on ease. That’s the upside-down kingdom. The path of surrender is where your soul is rebuilt. Carrying the cross might be heavy—but comfort never resurrected anyone. Only the cross leads to new life.
⸻
Prayer:
Jesus, I lay down my addiction to comfort and pick up what You’ve called me to carry. I don’t want a soft faith—I want a surrendered one. Help me walk in obedience, even when it’s uncomfortable. Use my daily “yes” to bring You glory.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
⸻
Action Step:
Today, do one thing that stretches your comfort zone for Christ—pray out loud, initiate a hard conversation, give generously, or share your faith. Remind yourself: “I’m not called to comfort. I’m called to carry the cross.”
