Confidence In The Middle

Psalm 27:13–14 (NIV)
I remain confident of this: I will see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living. Wait for the Lord. Be strong and take heart and wait for the Lord.

Confidence in God isn’t tested when life is going smoothly. It’s tested in the middle. The middle is the place where answers haven’t come, breakthrough hasn’t arrived, and prayers feel like they’re echoing back in silence. That’s where David found himself. But rather than give up, he declared something powerful: “I remain confident of this.” He didn’t say it because he felt confident. He said it as an act of defiant faith. Sometimes confidence in God isn’t a feeling. It’s a decision.

This kind of confidence is built in waiting seasons. Waiting doesn’t mean passivity. It means active trust. It means continuing to show up, worship, pray, and believe, even when there’s no visible evidence of change. Neuroscience tells us that the brain actually builds new pathways when we consistently choose hope in the face of delay. Faith rewires how we respond to the unknown. Hope deferred may make the heart sick, but expectation in the waiting is what keeps your soul alive.

David didn’t just tell himself to wait. He spoke directly to his own heart. “Be strong and take heart.” In Hebrew, this phrase carries the weight of courage being stirred up internally. David was reminding his soul that God’s goodness wasn’t a theory. It was a promise. And it would be seen right here, “in the land of the living.”

You may be in the middle right now. Not at the start, not at the finish, just stuck somewhere between what you prayed for and what you’re waiting to see. But don’t lose confidence. God is still moving, still working, still building. He has never left the construction site of your life.

Prayer:
God, give me confidence in the middle. When I don’t see the outcome yet, help me believe in Your goodness. Stir courage in my soul. Help me to wait with hope, not despair. Let my faith grow stronger, not weaker, while I wait. I trust that I will see Your goodness, not just someday, but in the land of the living. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
