Breathing

Luke 5:16
But Jesus often withdrew to lonely places and prayed.

Breathing is simple, but it’s everything. Inhale, exhale. Without it, life cannot continue. Spiritually, the Word and prayer are like breathing — one is the inhale, the other is the exhale. We inhale God’s truth as we read His Word, filling our minds and hearts with what He has spoken. We exhale through prayer, releasing our response, surrender, and dependence back to Him. This rhythm keeps our spiritual life alive and healthy.

Even Jesus, the Son of God, modeled this. Surrounded by crowds, miracles, and the pressures of ministry, He consistently withdrew to pray. He breathed in the Father’s will and breathed out obedience. If Jesus needed that rhythm, how much more do we? Skipping prayer or neglecting the Word is like holding your breath — you can only last so long before weakness sets in.

When you feel spiritually tired, overwhelmed, or empty, ask yourself: have I been breathing? Have I been inhaling God’s promises and exhaling prayers in His presence? Word without prayer can become lifeless information, and prayer without Word can drift into self-centeredness. But together, they sustain a Spirit-led life.

Your soul needs this rhythm daily. Not occasionally, not only in crisis, but every day. Just as your body depends on breathing, your spirit depends on the inhale of His Word and the exhale of prayer.

Prayer:

Lord, teach me to breathe in Your Word and breathe out my prayers. Help me find strength in the same rhythm that sustained Jesus — listening to Your voice and responding in surrender. May every breath I take today remind me of my dependence on You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
