Righteousness Is Received, Not Earned
Romans 3:22-23
“We are made right with God by placing our faith in Jesus Christ. And this is true for everyone who believes, no matter who we are. For everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God’s glorious standard.”
One of the greatest dangers in the Christian life is slowly beginning to believe that our righteousness comes from our own performance. It is easy to start comparing ourselves to others and feeling spiritually superior because of what we do or do not do. The Pharisees fell into this trap. They built their identity around external obedience while their hearts drifted far from God. They looked holy publicly while pride quietly poisoned them internally.
The Gospel completely destroys self-righteousness. Scripture says every single person has sinned and fallen short of God’s standard. Every believer came to Jesus broken. Every believer needed grace. Nobody was saved because they were good enough. We were saved because Jesus was merciful enough. Righteousness is not something we achieve through religious effort. It is something we receive through faith in Christ.
When we truly understand grace, it changes how we treat people. Humility begins replacing judgment. Compassion begins replacing criticism. Gratitude begins replacing comparison. A person who understands how much they have been forgiven usually has far more patience with the struggles of others.
At the same time, grace is never permission to live carelessly. The righteousness of Christ working within us produces transformation. The Holy Spirit changes desires, attitudes, speech, and actions. Right living becomes evidence that the Kingdom is taking root in the heart.
Prayer:
Jesus, thank You for making me righteous through Your sacrifice on the cross. Protect my heart from pride and self-righteousness. Help me walk humbly before You and extend grace to others the same way You have extended grace to me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
