Forgiveness Before the Feeling

Luke 23:34 (ESV)
“And Jesus said, ‘Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.’”

Forgiveness is often portrayed as an emotional breakthrough, but many times forgiveness begins as an act of obedience long before it becomes a feeling. Jesus prayed for the forgiveness of the very people who mocked Him, beat Him, and nailed Him to the cross. The pain was still fresh. The wounds were still open. Yet grace flowed from Him even while suffering remained.

Corrie ten Boom understood this deeply. After surviving the horrors of a Nazi concentration camp, she encountered one of the guards responsible for so much suffering. He approached her after a church service and extended his hand, celebrating the forgiveness of Jesus. Corrie later admitted that every emotion inside of her resisted forgiveness. She did not feel compassion. She did not feel peace. She silently prayed, “Jesus, help me,” and by faith she reached out her hand.

Sometimes we mistakenly believe we must feel healed before we forgive. But often forgiveness is what begins the healing process. Obedience opens the door for God to do what human strength cannot accomplish. Forgiveness is supernatural because it requires us to love beyond our natural ability.

The cross teaches us that forgiveness is not rooted in human emotion. It is rooted in the character of God. The same Spirit that empowered Jesus to forgive on the cross now lives inside believers today. What feels impossible in our strength becomes possible through His grace.

Prayer
Jesus, help me forgive even when my emotions resist it. Teach me to walk by faith instead of feelings. Give me supernatural strength to release those who have hurt me and trust You with the outcome. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
