Who Do You Say I Am

Matthew 16:15-16 (NLT)
“Then he asked them, ‘But who do you say I am?’ Simon Peter answered, ‘You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.’”

There are many questions in life that demand an answer. What career will I pursue? Who will I marry? Where will I live? How will I spend my time? Yet none of those questions carry the weight of the question Jesus asked His disciples at Caesarea Philippi. Standing in a city filled with pagan worship, false gods, and competing voices, Jesus looked at His followers and asked, “Who do you say I am?”

Notice that Jesus didn’t ask what the crowds thought. He didn’t ask what the religious leaders believed. He didn’t ask for a public opinion poll. He made the question personal. Peter could not borrow someone else’s answer, and neither can we. Every person must eventually decide who Jesus is. Was He merely a good teacher? A moral example? A historical figure? Or is He truly the Messiah, the Son of the living God?

The answer to that question shapes everything else in our lives. If Jesus is only a teacher, then we can take or leave His advice. If He is merely a historical figure, then His words carry no authority over us today. But if He is the Messiah, then He deserves our worship, our obedience, our trust, and our surrender. Peter’s confession became the foundation upon which Christ would build His church because it recognized Jesus for who He truly is.

The world is still filled with competing voices. Culture has its opinions. Social media has its opinions. Friends, coworkers, and even family members have their opinions. Yet through all the noise, Jesus still asks the same question He asked two thousand years ago: “Who do you say I am?” Before you answer any other question this week, settle that one in your heart.

Prayer:
Father, thank You for sending Your Son into the world. Open my eyes to see Jesus clearly and to know Him for who He truly is. Help me not to be influenced by the opinions of others, but to build my life on the truth of who Christ is. Strengthen my faith and deepen my conviction that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of the living God. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
