The Gates Will NOT Prevail
Matthew 16:18 (NLT)
“Now I say to you that you are Peter (which means ‘rock’), and upon this rock I will build my church, and all the powers of hell will not conquer it.”
When Jesus made this declaration, He was standing in a region known for pagan worship and spiritual darkness. It was an unlikely place to announce the future victory of the Church. Yet that is exactly what He did. Surrounded by temples, idols, and competing beliefs, Jesus boldly declared that nothing hell could devise would ultimately stop what He was building.
Many believers live as though the Church is barely hanging on, desperately trying to survive the pressures of culture. But Jesus painted a different picture. Gates are defensive structures. Gates don’t advance; they resist advancement. When Jesus said the gates of hell would not prevail, He was declaring that the forces of darkness would not be strong enough to stop the advancing Kingdom of God.
History has repeatedly proven this to be true. Empires have risen and fallen. Governments have attempted to silence the gospel. Persecution has come in waves across generations. Yet the Church continues to grow because it is not sustained by human strength. It is built by Christ Himself. The same Jesus who established His Church is still building it today.
When you look around and see darkness, don’t lose heart. The enemy is not winning. The gospel is still changing lives. People are still finding freedom. Families are still being restored. Hearts are still being transformed. The Church belongs to Jesus, and what He builds cannot be destroyed. Stand confidently today knowing that the Kingdom of God is advancing and the gates of hell will not prevail.
Prayer:
Father, thank You that Your Kingdom cannot be shaken. When I see darkness around me, help me remember that You are still on the throne and Your Church is still advancing. Give me confidence in Your promises and courage to live boldly for You. Help me trust that what You have started, You will finish. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
