One of the greatest misconceptions about hearing God's voice is that it's a gift reserved for a select few. We assume there are certain Christians who have a special ability to hear from God while the rest of us are left trying to figure things out on our own. Jesus paints a very different picture.
In John 10, Jesus doesn't say, "My most spiritual sheep know My voice." He simply says, "My sheep know My voice." In other words, recognizing the Shepherd's voice isn't the exception for believers—it's the expectation. The question isn't whether God is willing to speak. The question is whether we've spent enough time with Him to recognize His voice.
Think about the people who are closest to you. You don't recognize your spouse's voice because you studied it. You recognize it because you've shared years of conversations together. You know the sound of their laughter, the tone they use when they're excited, and even the way they say your name. Familiarity wasn't created in a moment; it was built through relationship.
The same is true with Jesus. We don't learn His voice by searching for secret formulas or waiting for extraordinary experiences. We learn His voice by spending time with Him. Every moment in God's Word teaches us more about His character. Every prayer deepens our dependence upon Him. Every act of obedience reinforces our confidence that His way is always better than our own. Over time, we begin to recognize not only what God says but also how God speaks.
This is why reading Scripture is so important. The Bible doesn't simply tell us what God has said; it reveals who God is. As we come to know His heart, we become better at discerning His leading. We begin to recognize the things that sound like Jesus because they reflect the character we've come to know through His Word. The Shepherd's voice always sounds like the Shepherd.
If you're frustrated because you feel like you don't hear God very often, don't become discouraged. Don't start chasing dramatic experiences or comparing your story to someone else's. Simply spend more time with Jesus. Relationships aren't built in a day, and neither is spiritual discernment. The more you know the Shepherd, the more naturally you'll recognize His voice.

Set aside fifteen uninterrupted minutes today to simply be with Jesus. Read one chapter from the Gospel of John, pray through what you've read, and spend a few moments in silence before moving on with your day. Don't rush to ask God for answers. Simply enjoy being in His presence.
