THE POWER OF DEPENDENCE

I am the vine; you are the branches...apart from me you can do nothing. John 15:5

DEVOTIONAL
Jesus did not say that apart from Him we would accomplish slightly less. He said that apart from Him we can do nothing. We may create activity, attract attention, and appear successful, but we cannot produce lasting spiritual fruit without remaining connected to Him.

Prayer is where our dependence upon God becomes visible. When we neglect prayer, we may never say it aloud, but our actions communicate, 'God, I can handle this. I have the experience. I know what to do.' Prayer is the moment when we acknowledge, 'God, if You do not move, this will not work. If You do not breathe upon it, it will have no life. If You do not provide wisdom, my best ideas will not be enough.'

A branch does not struggle to manufacture fruit by itself. Its responsibility is to remain connected to the vine. Life flows through that connection, and fruit follows. In the same way, spiritual fruit does not come from trying harder while remaining disconnected from Jesus. It comes from abiding in Him.

Prayer is spiritual fuel. A vehicle can look impressive, possess every feature, and be perfectly polished, but without fuel it is not going anywhere. Likewise, a person can possess talent, knowledge, resources, and ambition but still lack the spiritual strength necessary to accomplish anything of eternal significance.

We do not pray because we have nothing else to do. We pray because nothing we do matters without God. Prayer is not a sign of weakness. It is the wisdom to recognize the source of our strength.

REFLECT
Where have you been relying primarily upon your own wisdom, talent, or experience?

What would dependence upon Jesus look like in that area?

TODAY'S STEP
Name one area you have been trying to manage alone. Open your hands before God and surrender it specifically to Him.

PRAYER
Jesus, You are the vine and I am a branch. Apart from You, I cannot produce the fruit You desire. Forgive me for trusting my own strength. Teach me to abide in You through prayer, Your Word, and obedience. Let Your life flow through me and produce fruit that brings glory to Your name. Amen.
