Why Church - Week 4 – Why Generosity

Sep 6, 2026    Creg Darby

This week in our Why Church series, we explore why generosity matters. Building on last week's message about serving, we look at 1 Peter 4:10 and Psalm 24:1 to understand that everything we have, our time, talent, and treasure, belongs to God and we are simply stewards of it. We unpack how generosity begins as a belief that everything is God's and becomes a practical decision when we willingly open our hands, walking through Proverbs 3:9-10 to see how honoring God with our finances flows out of truth, trust, and obedience. Through the story of Barnabas in Acts 4, who sold a piece of land and laid the proceeds at the apostles' feet, we discover that his generosity was not a single moment but the revealing of a surrendered heart that would go on to make his reputation, time, influence, and entire life available to God. We also look at practical steps for growing in generosity, giving first, giving intentionally, and giving cheerfully, drawn from 1 Corinthians 16:2 and 2 Corinthians 9:7. Before generosity changes what we give, it changes how we see what we have.
