Overcoming Spiritual Heart Disease
Romans 6:23 (ESV)
“For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
Heart disease is one of the top causes of death in much of the developed world. Ironically, our spiritual lives mirror this, as sin leads to death. Before accepting Jesus Christ, we all suffer from a form of spiritual heart disease, manifesting as chains, slavery to sin, and cycles of sin leading to death. However, we are fortunate to have a divine heart surgeon willing to tackle the darkest and ugliest heart disease. God promises to give us a new heart and a new spirit, removing our heart of stone and giving us a heart of flesh, as stated in Ezekiel 36:26-27.
In Ezekiel, God speaks to His people through the prophet, promising to restore their land and relationship with Him by giving them a new heart. This heart transformation is a supernatural change through the Holy Spirit, received by the grace of God. This promise is fulfilled in the New Testament and continues today through the Holy Spirit's work in our lives. We might think our hearts are too dirty for change, but the Creator of the universe is more than capable of transforming even the darkest heart.
This heart surgery involves a complete replacement of the old heart with a new one. God not only takes away the old heart but fills us anew with His Spirit. John 14:26 says, "But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you." The result is a life that produces the fruits of the Spirit, a life marked by love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. This transformation makes us new creations in Christ, as emphasized in John 3:3, where Jesus says, "Very truly I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again."
Prayer:
Dear Lord, we thank You for the gift of a new heart and a new spirit. We ask that You continue to transform us, filling us with Your Holy Spirit. Help us to produce the fruits of the Spirit in our lives and to walk in obedience to Your commands. May we always remember that through You, we are made new. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.
