A New Identity
2 Corinthians 5:17
Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.
One of the most powerful things about following Jesus is that He doesn’t just forgive us—He makes us new. Forgiveness wipes away the guilt of our past, but identity in Christ gives us a brand-new future. You may have been labeled by mistakes, by addiction, or by what others have said about you, but those labels don’t define who you are in Christ. He calls you son. He calls you daughter.
For those who have battled addiction, identity can be especially tricky. “Addict,” “failure,” “lost cause”—these names linger like shadows. But the gospel gives us a new name. We are not defined by where we’ve been but by where God is leading us. The old self, with all its failures and baggage, has passed away. In Christ, the new has come.
And this truth isn’t only for people overcoming addiction—it’s for all of us. We all wrestle with labels from our past: “not enough,” “too broken,” “unworthy.” The cross tears those labels off and replaces them with truth: “beloved,” “redeemed,” “chosen.” When you live out of your new identity in Christ, you’re free to walk in purpose, not in shame.
Prayer:
Lord, thank You for making us new creations in Christ. Help us to release the old labels that no longer define us and embrace the identity You’ve given us as sons and daughters. Teach us to walk boldly in the freedom and purpose of our new life. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
