Return to the Word
Psalm 119:103 (NKJV)
How sweet are Your words to my taste, sweeter than honey to my mouth!
The second step in returning to our first love is coming back to the Word of God. Scripture is more than ink on a page; it is God’s voice, His love letter to us. When we open the Bible, we are not just reading — we are encountering the heart of God. The more we know Him through His Word, the more our love for Him grows.
Think back to when you first began following Jesus. Chances are, you couldn’t get enough of the Word. Every verse seemed alive, every page spoke directly to your heart. That excitement wasn’t about novelty — it was about relationship. You were hearing the voice of the One who saved you. But over time, the thrill can fade, and the Bible can feel routine or even burdensome. That’s why Jesus calls us back to the Word — because without it, our love will always grow cold.
The Word keeps our love fresh because it reminds us of God’s promises, His character, and His faithfulness. Just as you wouldn’t stop eating your favorite meal simply because you’ve had it before, we can’t stop feasting on Scripture. Every time we open it, God has something new to say, something to nourish our soul and rekindle our passion for Him.
If your heart feels distant, open your Bible again. Ask the Spirit to speak to you. Don’t read just to check a box; read to encounter the God who loves you. His Word is alive, and it will draw you back to your first love.
Prayer:
Lord, thank You for speaking to me through Your Word. Forgive me for the times I’ve taken it for granted or treated it as routine. Awaken my heart again to the beauty of Scripture. Let every page remind me of Your love and stir my affection for You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
