Bold Faith

Revelation 2:13
I know where you live—where Satan has his throne. Yet you remain true to my name. You did not renounce your faith in me, not even in the days of Antipas, my faithful witness, who was put to death in your city—where Satan lives.

Pergamum was not an easy place to be a Christian. It was the capital city of Asia Minor, filled with temples to Zeus, Asclepius, Dionysus, and even emperor worship. Jesus Himself described it as the place where “Satan has his throne.” That’s more than poetic exaggeration. The city was literally a stronghold of idolatry, false worship, and political power that demanded ultimate loyalty. To live there as a follower of Jesus meant constant pressure—cultural, religious, and political—to bow to something other than Christ.

And yet, Jesus commends this church: “You remain true to My name.” That line is stunning. They lived in the shadow of the altar of Zeus, under the eye of Rome’s imperial cult, and in the midst of seductive false religions—and they had not denied the name of Jesus. Their faith was not a Sunday-only commitment. It was costly, dangerous, and public. Faith in Pergamum wasn’t about being popular; it was about being faithful.

This verse presses us to ask a hard question: how do we live faithfully when our world is also saturated with idols? They may not look like marble temples, but the gods of our culture are alive and well—comfort, money, status, sex, politics, self-expression. To hold fast to Jesus’ name today often means being misunderstood, mocked, or even opposed. We are not yet facing death like Antipas, but we do face pressure every day to dilute our faith so that it “fits” better with the world around us.

Jesus’ words remind us: He sees. “I know where you live.” He knows the environment, the challenges, the hostility. And His commendation wasn’t based on numbers, influence, or cultural acceptance. It was based on faithfulness. Faith that refuses to bend in the shadow of Satan’s throne. Faith that clings to Jesus’ name above all else.

Prayer:
Lord Jesus, You see the pressures of the world around us. You know the idols that surround our culture and the temptations that try to pull us away from You. Give us courage to remain true to Your name. Help us to stand firm when it’s easier to compromise, to confess Your name when it’s easier to stay silent, and to trust You when we feel the weight of the world pressing in. May our faith honor You even in the shadow of Satan’s throne. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
