It Can't Be Built Without Him
Mark 8:36
For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul?
Laodicea was known for its resilience. When an earthquake destroyed much of the city in 60 AD, the citizens proudly rebuilt it without any help from Rome. It became a badge of honor, a symbol of strength, success, and independence. But the very attitude that rebuilt their city had also rebuilt their faith around themselves. They didn’t realize that while they had gained stability in the world’s eyes, they had lost sensitivity in God’s. They were living proof that you can rebuild everything around you and still have a crumbling soul.
We live in a culture that rewards hustle, glorifies self-made success, and equates achievement with value. It is possible to build a beautiful life, a career, a home, a reputation, and still be spiritually bankrupt. We can spend years constructing what looks strong but stands on weak foundations. Without Christ at the center, everything we build eventually collapses under the weight of its own emptiness. The same hands that built the world were meant to build our lives. When He is the architect, there is no storm that can undo His design.
There is nothing wrong with ambition or excellence. God wired us to create, lead, and build. But He never intended for those abilities to replace dependence on Him. When we build without God, we end up striving instead of stewarding. When we build with Him, what we create carries eternal weight. The difference between worldly success and kingdom success isn’t what you build; it’s who you’re building with.
If you feel like your life is missing peace even though everything looks put together, that’s your reminder that God is inviting you to rebuild with Him. The goal isn’t just to have more; it’s to have meaning. Every moment, every gift, every accomplishment is safest in His hands. Jesus doesn’t want to take away what you’ve built. He just wants to be the foundation beneath it.
Prayer:
Lord, help me to build my life with You, not apart from You. If I’ve been constructing things that leave You out, teach me how to rebuild the right way. Remind me that no success is worth it if it costs my soul. Be the architect of my purpose and the foundation of everything I create. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
